Executive Summary / About the Customer
Çelebi Aviation Holding is a well-established company committed to providing excellent ground handling services and ensuring customer satisfaction through complementary products. Founded in 1958 as Turkey’s first private ground handling company, Çelebi has grown to become one of the leading players in the Turkish Civil Aviation sector. The company offers a range of services, including ramp, passenger, and cargo handling, warehouse management, bridge operations, transportation, general aviation, airport lounge management, and premium services.
Today, with over 15,000 employees, Çelebi operates in 70 locations across six countries on three continents. This extensive global presence stands as a testament to the company’s dedication to innovation, reliability, and operational excellence in aviation services.
Problem Statement
Given the critical nature of Çelebi’s operations across multiple geographies, ensuring uninterrupted service is paramount. However, the growing risk of disasters—both natural and technical—posed a threat to the availability and reliability of our critical workloads. Our existing on-premises infrastructure lacked agility and resilience to recover quickly from potential failures, which could lead to significant disruptions in service and operational delays. To mitigate these risks, we needed a robust disaster recovery solution capable of synchronizing workloads to a secure cloud environment.
Solution (Practice)
To address this challenge, Çelebi implemented a disaster recovery solution leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS). The strategy involved:
Comprehensive Disaster Recovery Architecture: AWS’s Disaster Recovery (DR) services were used to create a scalable and resilient architecture, ensuring real-time synchronization of critical workloads. Key AWS services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, and AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (AWS DRS) were deployed to establish a failover mechanism.
Automated Data Replication: AWS DRS enabled seamless replication of on-premises workloads to AWS cloud regions. This minimized data loss and ensured near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
Rapid Failover and Failback:Through AWS’s failover capabilities, the solution allowed for rapid recovery of services in the event of a disaster. With predefined recovery workflows and automation, Recovery Time Objective (RTO) was significantly reduced.
Testing and Validation: Regular DR simulations were conducted using AWS tools to validate the efficiency of the solution and ensure preparedness for real-world disaster scenarios.
Benefits
Implementing the AWS Disaster Recovery solution delivered significant benefits to Çelebi Aviation Holding:
Enhanced Resilience:
Critical operations are now safeguarded against downtime, ensuring continuity of service and protecting the company’s reputation.
Scalability and Flexibility:
The cloud-based DR solution offers scalable resources, allowing the company to adapt as its operations grow across new locations and services.
Cost Optimization:
By leveraging AWS’s pay-as-you-go model, Çelebi reduced the need for costly on-premises backup infrastructure, achieving substantial cost savings.
Improved Confidence and Preparedness:
Regular testing of the DR strategy bolstered organizational confidence in the system’s ability to handle real-world disasters effectively.
Global Coverage:
AWS’s global infrastructure aligned seamlessly with Çelebi’s multi-continent operations, providing consistent disaster recovery capabilities across all regions.
This case exemplifies the critical role of cloud technologies in modern aviation operations. By adopting AWS for disaster recovery, Çelebi Aviation Holding not only mitigated risks but also strengthened its operational excellence, ensuring it remains a trusted partner in the global aviation industry.
