Executive Summary

Our client, Harem Altın, the infrastructure manager for Turkey’s largest gold exchange, was encountering significant delays in their web applications. The existing architecture and infrastructure were incompatible with their operational environments, resulting in persistent instability issues. Effective synchronization of web applications was paramount for Harem Altın, necessitating a transition to the AWS Cloud. With the expertise of LimonCloud, Harem Altın aimed to overcome these challenges and establish a modern, stable infrastructure.

During the migration process, LimonCloud conducted a thorough analysis of Harem Altın’s requirements and needs. Based on this analysis, LimonCloud designed a tailored AWS Cloud Infrastructure that ensured both modernization and stability. In this project, LimonCloud assumed responsibility for managing the infrastructure, while Harem Altın continued to handle software and code development internally. This case study explores the advantages realized through migrating to AWS, detailing the solutions implemented to address the challenges encountered during the transition.

Problem Statement

Harem Altın’s web applications were consistently malfunctioning due to an outdated and inadequate infrastructure. The existing system struggled with inconsistent load balancing between web servers, which was insufficient to handle high traffic volumes. Consequently, Harem Altın faced significant challenges in delivering reliable services to its customers. Additionally, some critical applications were experiencing frequent crashes because they lacked the ability to scale effectively under increased load.

To identify and address the root causes of these structural issues and to enhance customer service, Harem Altın engaged LimonCloud. Upon analyzing Harem Altın’s infrastructure, LimonCloud recommended migrating certain applications from virtual servers to AWS services. This strategic shift aimed to eliminate instabilities and architectural complexities, reduce the management and maintenance burden on Harem Altın, and optimize costs by replacing numerous operational virtual servers with scalable AWS services such as AWS WAF, Amazon RDS, Amazon Fargate, Amazon ElastiCache, and Amazon Elastic Load Balancer.

Solutions for Harem Altın

LimonCloud analyzed Harem Altın’s infrastructure needs and implemented optimized solutions to improve performance, scalability, and security. The migration strategy leveraged AWS services to modernize systems, reduce costs, and enhance reliability.

Harem Altın’s web applications were migrated to Amazon EC2 instances, improving performance and minimizing downtime. Additionally, AWS Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) was introduced to manage traffic distribution, eliminating the need for manual load balancing and reducing operational costs.

Critical applications were containerized using Docker and deployed on AWS Fargate and Amazon ECS. This approach provided a serverless architecture with auto-scaling capabilities, ensuring applications dynamically scaled to meet demand, preventing crashes, and improving reliability.

Harem Altın’s databases were migrated to Amazon RDS, improving performance, reducing timeout errors, and enhancing communication between web applications and databases. This transition resulted in a more stable and scalable system.

Security management was shifted from virtual server firewalls to AWS WAF, automating threat detection and mitigation. This change improved security performance and reduced administrative overhead.

To address budget constraints, Harem Altın’s virtual servers were transitioned to reserved instances under Amazon EC2. This move provided predictable pricing, operational efficiency, and long-term cost savings without sacrificing performance.

LimonCloud implemented AWS ElastiCache for caching services, integrated with Amazon RDS. This reduced system latency, improved response times, and enhanced application performance.

Latency issues, especially during logins, were resolved using Amazon CloudFront. Its global content delivery network (CDN) improved load times, enhanced responsiveness, and boosted customer satisfaction.

Results and Benefits

LimonCloud successfully managed the migration process for Harem Altın, delivering essential services on AWS and ensuring a seamless transition through close collaboration between the LimonCloud and Harem Altın teams. The migration yielded several significant benefits:

Enhanced Web Application Performance: Migrating web servers to Amazon EC2 led to a notable improvement in web application performance, ensuring faster and more reliable service delivery.

Stabilized Database Systems:  Transitioning the database to AWS RDS established a more stable and efficient system, reducing downtime and enhancing data management capabilities.

Improved Security Posture:Implementing security measures through AWS WAF significantly reduced the incidence of attacks on the website, ensuring uninterrupted system operation and safeguarding sensitive data.

Optimized Application Performance with ElastiCache:  The adoption of Amazon ElastiCache alleviated the load on the database, resulting in a 10% improvement in overall application performance.

Reduced Latency and Enhanced User Experience:  Integrating Amazon CloudFront minimized latency on web pages, thereby elevating end-user satisfaction through faster content delivery.

Simplified Load Balancing: The shift to Amazon Elastic Load Balancer eliminated complexities in application load distribution, stabilizing the distribution of traffic across web servers and enhancing system reliability.

Scalable Critical Applications: By dockerizing critical applications and deploying them on AWS Fargate and Amazon ECS, Harem Altın achieved seamless scalability through auto-scaling features. This capability resolved previous crashing issues, ensuring that critical applications remained robust and responsive under varying loads.

Cost Optimization: Strategic utilization of reserved instances and the replacement of multiple virtual servers with AWS-managed services resulted in significant cost savings, allowing Harem Altın to allocate resources more efficiently.
