Migration for Karnaval
Executive Summary
Karnaval Medya faced a series of challenges that necessitated a strategic migration to a more robust and scalable infrastructure. The escalating costs associated with maintaining on-premises infrastructure prompted the search for a cost-effective and flexible alternative. Additionally, heightened security concerns led to a specific requirement for an isolated AWS environment, accessible exclusively through a VPN instance to ensure enhanced protection. As a provider of online radio, music, and podcast content, Karnaval Medya prioritized minimizing downtime in their web applications, underscoring the need for a seamless migration to the AWS Cloud. Recognizing the complexities involved in this transition, Karnaval Medya engaged LimonCloud for technical support, emphasizing the importance of expertise to guarantee a smooth and uninterrupted migration process.
About Karnaval Medya
Karnaval Medya Group operates some of Turkey’s most listened-to radio stations, including Süper FM, Metro FM, JoyTurk, Joy FM, and Virgin Radio Turkey. The group encompasses over 30 digital radio stations catering to diverse musical tastes, such as Borusan Klasik, Efkar, Joy Akustik, RetroTurk, and Radio Mydonose.
As Turkey’s largest radio platform and one of the world’s most listened-to digital radio outlets according to Triton Digital Webcast Metrics, Karnaval Medya offers an uninterrupted live radio experience with extensive playlists and the country’s most popular podcasts all in one place. Reaching 10 million individual listeners per month, Karnaval Medya continues to pioneer in the fields of entertainment and music.
Problem Statement
Karnaval Medya required a highly available and scalable infrastructure, as the costs associated with maintaining on-premises systems had become unsustainable. The company sought a more cost-effective and flexible solution to support its expanding operations while reducing IT expenses.
Security was another key priority. Karnaval Medya requested that all servers be deployed in an isolated environment, with access granted exclusively through a VPN connection. Direct access to the servers via external IP addresses could potentially expose the system to significant security vulnerabilities and make it susceptible to attacks.
Minimizing downtime during the migration process was equally important. Since Karnaval Medya delivers online radio, music, and podcast content through web applications hosted on EC2 instances, maintaining continuous service availability was essential to avoid disruptions and preserve customer satisfaction.
To address these challenges, Karnaval Medya engaged LimonCloud for technical expertise and support. Their involvement ensured a smooth and uninterrupted migration to the AWS Cloud, meeting Karnaval Medya’s operational, security, and performance requirements.
Solution for Karnaval Medya
LimonCloud successfully migrated Karnaval Medya’s existing virtual servers to the AWS cloud environment using AWS Application Migration Service with the “Lift and Shift” strategy. This approach enabled a fast and seamless migration without requiring any reconfiguration or code modifications to the existing applications. During the migration process, the continuous data replication feature provided by AWS Application Migration Service was utilized to minimize downtime and ensure service continuity. Furthermore, data integrity was prioritized, and the migration was completed without any data loss.
LimonCloud migrated Karnaval Medya’s MySQL database, previously hosted on a virtual server, to Amazon RDS for MySQL, resulting in improved operational efficiency. This transition significantly reduced Karnaval Medya’s operational burden related to database management while delivering notable improvements in scalability, security, and performance across critical areas.
LimonCloud deployed EC2 instances configured with a “compute optimized” instance type to support Karnaval Medya’s applications. Amazon CloudWatch health checks were integrated to monitor instance state metrics, such as whether instances were running, hibernating, stopping, or terminating. Application Load Balancer (ALB) ensured high availability by automatically redirecting traffic to healthy instances whenever an issue occurred.
Karnaval Medya benefited from the 1-Year Reserved Instances purchasing model, which delivered a flexible and cost-effective solution. This approach not only optimized costs but also guaranteed high performance for their workloads.
Security requirements were met by deploying EC2 instances within a private subnet. Access to these instances was controlled through a third-party VPN solution, enabling Karnaval Medya to securely perform updates and upgrades to their web applications while maintaining a robust and protected infrastructure.
Results and Benefits
Through meticulous technical management and the provision of essential services within the AWS ecosystem, LimonCloud successfully addressed the needs and requirements of Karnaval Medya. The migration has yielded significant benefits, with Karnaval Medya expressing satisfaction with the high performance of the AWS end-user computing services.
Reduced IT Costs:
Leveraging Amazon EC2’s pay-as-you-go payment model resulted in lower IT expenses, allowing Karnaval Medya to allocate resources more effectively towards their core business operations rather than infrastructure management.
Minimized Downtime:
The implementation of ALB and Amazon CloudWatch services significantly reduced downtime. This ensured the consistent delivery of educational content, thereby enhancing business continuity and improving customer satisfaction scores.
Enhanced Security:
By placing EC2 instances in private subnets and facilitating secure access through VPN, the security of Karnaval Medya’s environment was substantially increased, mitigating potential vulnerabilities and safeguarding sensitive data.
